Green Herons

The Green Heron is a small wading bird that includes Georgia in its spring/summer breeding range. With a dark greenish cap and yellowish legs, the Green Heron is visually distinguishable from other Heron species by its compact size (16-18 inches tall) and habit of keeping its long neck pulled in tight to its body; in flight, it can be mistaken for a crow. The Green Heron nests in trees and shrubs near or over water and forages in ponds, lakes, marshes, and along streams. One of just a few tool-using bird species, Green Herons forage for small fish by dropping bait such as insects and twigs onto the water to draw prey close to the surface.
